Japan has been an aggressive player in the fuel cell game for quite some time now. The Japanese government places is placing a lot of emphasis on fuel cell systems as a means to reduce emissions to 15% below 2005 levels by 2020. Japan has even had several programs to subsidize and facilitate the installation of units into homes. As a data and consumer input excercise thousands of 1-kW fuel cells were installed. Issues addressed by this program of installations related technical problems, reducing cost and improving durability. Factors seen as vital to gaining mass market acceptance of fuel cells.
Japans major corporations such as Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Nippon Oil Corporation, Toho Gas, Saibu Gas Co., and Astomos Energy (a joint venture between Idemitsu Kosan and Mitsubishi), joined to sell a proton exchange membrane (PEM) residential fuel cell system, the ENEFARM. Sales of this device had gone above initial expectations. So much so that the target number of units that were to be produced has had to be raised to meet the demand.
The above method is only one way that is being used by japanese corporations in order to bring fuel cell technology to the consumer. Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is joining with Aisin Seiki Co. Ltd. to provide 30 residential, solid oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) cogeneration systems developed jointly by Osaka Gas Co., Ltd., Kyocera Corporation, TMC and Aisin to five Japanese gas companies, as part of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s (NEDO’s) Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Verification Project for 2009. Two very large Japanese Auto manufacturers Honda and Toyota have been very active in the fuel cell vehicle market. They already have a market presence in both the U.S. and Japan and are set to increase thier volume in both markets over the next couple of years.
The FC EXPO will be a significant event! Many new ideas will be generated and products showcased. Fuel Cell technology is here to stay and will become the solution for replacing fossil fuels as the energy that drives industry and powers households.
